Tips And Advices - Measure OBD-II Output

Edit By:Care Cars
Purchase software called AutoTap, which comes in both PDA and laptop versions. You should receive the cable with the software that is needed to connect the computer to the onboard OBD-II scanner. The hardware and software package runs about $200 and updated software is another $100.

Plug the AutoTap into the ports of the OBD-II system, usually located under the dash or in the passenger seat compartment. It is always within three feet of the driver's seat. The software is displayed on your hand-held or laptop computer while you sit in your car.

Borrow or buy a simple hand-held scanner, which is available at most auto parts stores. This scanner will not provide as much detailed data as a computerized software program, but it can serve you well enough to measure output.

Take your vehicle to a mechanic who uses a large scanner. Tell the mechanic what kinds of data you are interested in finding. A full-service scanner can show you up to 300 various pieces of data about your car's performance. Most mechanics typically charge a fee to use the scanner.
