Prepare an emergency kit that includes a flashlight, flares, jumper cables, blanket, lighter and non-perishable foods.
Place a bag of sand in the trunk of the car if it is rear-wheel drive. This adds weight over the tires for better traction, but more importantly, it will be of use should you ever become stuck in snow.
Make sure there is a working jack in the vehicle.
