Tips And Advices - change the AIR FILTER in a 2000 VW JETTA

Edit By:Care Cars
Go to your nearest auto parts store and purchase the right air filter for your car. Most places will have a list or be able to determine the right part for your year, model, make etc.

My car, which is a 2000 VR6 Jetta, took a Fram filter-- (Height 1.25, Outside Length 14, Outside Width 7.188), which I bought at Canadian Tire.

Park somewhere in the shade, pop the hood, and let the engine cool down a bit before going to work. Locate the air filter box: it will be found to the right of your engine, and under the battery. It's a rectangular black box about the size of a bread box (or the filter you just bought = P).

The box that houses the filter has two screws at the top on the left and right sides that help keep the lid on - these screws do not come out completely, so you don't have to worry about losing them.

Unscrew both screws, as far as they will come out.

The lid is also secured by four clips along the bottom. You should be able to unclip these by hand, but if not, wedging the screwdriver under them will help to pry them apart.

Pushing the lid back (towards the windshield) and pulling up with moderate force will allow you to partially remove the lid. It does not need to be completely removed in order to change the filter.

Keeping in mind the way it is positioned, remove the old filter, which will likely be a bright orange or yellow colour, which helps the dirt to show up.

The filter may be completely filthy if you haven't changed it in a while, or it might appear to be clean.

Even if it seems to be only slightly dirty, or not much at all, it's still best to change it at least once a year - especially if you drive in dirty/dusty environments on a daily basis. Water and dirt can build up and dry on the filter, creating a sort of crust, and hindering air flow.

Insert the new filter the same way the old one was positioned, ensuring that the fit is snug around the sides.

Close up the lid, clips first, then screw the two screws back in.

Close the hood, and enjoy your better gas mileage = )
