Tips And Advices - Get a Specialty License Plate in Montana

Edit By:Care Cars
Logon to Montana's official website at mt.gov.

Click on "State Agencies" and "Motor Vehicle Division" under "Department of Justice."

Select "License Plates." Read over the general rules and regulations governing license plate acquisition.

Scroll down to "Plate Design and Fees." Select specialty license plates that you are interested in obtaining. Read over the specific information presented for each plate, including fees, eligibility requirements and contact information.

Choose a specialty license plate to acquire. Call, write or email the specialty license plate's sponsoring organization and request that an application for the plate be sent to you.

Receive the application and complete it. Collect all eligibility documentation, if necessary. If you are interested in acquiring military license plates, obtain Department of Defense documents, a document detailing the circumstances surrounding your discharge or a re-enlistment form.

Mail the application to the sponsoring organization.

Get an approval notice from the sponsoring organization.

Take the approval notice, a copy of your vehicle's current registration and valid identification to your county treasurer's office. Submit all forms and complete any remaining applications.

Pay all applicable fees.

Obtain your specialty license plate after a few weeks and use. If you have been issued a temporary license plate permit in lieu of your specialty plates, exchange the permit for the permanent specialty plates upon picking them up.
